www.Sonlight.com is a small, christian-based publishing company that provides packaged curriculum sets of “living books” for various ages. Instead of sending you one high priced textbook, they send many (60…70..80) regular books each focusing on a specific topic, and corresponding to that year’s learning goals.

The Sonlight Core for each age is composed high quality children’s literature books (fiction and non-fiction) that focuses on specific subjects. The Core’s main purpose is to teach history, social studies, and science. However, you can purchase a full year’s curriculum for other subjects as well (math, reading skills, language arts, etc.).

Using the available teacher’s plan, you read through each of the living books provided during the year, performing narration and copywork as you go along (ala CM Method). The teacher’s plan provides a complete layout of daily lesson plans for the entire year, using your choice of a 5 day week or 4 day week schedule. Because of the flexibility that the living books provide, however, you can choose whether or not to use the teacher’s plan, allowing you to read as much or as little as your child’s interests dictate.

The books have been hand selected, focus on high quality, and feature literary award winning notables such as The House at Pooh Corner, Charlotte’s Web, Johnny Tremain, and Young Fu of the Upper Yangtzee. Most of the books hold the distiction of Caldecott and Newberry awards for children’s literature.

For those who do not have the time or inclination to search the library and evaluate books on their own, this provides an easy path to learning.
