5 Solid Reasons to Homeschool

Family and Religion - As a Christian, you want your child to develop the knowledge and beliefs of a scriptural world view. You also want him to develop character, morals, and good habits. Furthermore, as his protector, you want to shield your child from actions and beliefs that you don’t want him internalizing (drug use, humanism, evolution as the only truth, no creator, etc.). Homeschooling centers on the God-given family unit as it’s main core, allowing your child to view his parents and siblings as role models and “ones to emulate”. Extended family-togetherness will be a much cherished part of their childhood memories later on!

Rights - As an American, it is your constitutional right to choose which course of education is best for your child, whether that course should be a great public school, christian private school, or full time homeschooling. As a homeschooler, you are upholding your political rights along with the knowledge that you are doing your best for your child’s future.

Time - Being tied to a 9 month school calendar is hard for many families. A strict 8 am -3 pm Monday through Friday, August through May schedule may not be feasible for all parents, and it’s a struggle sometimes to follow it. Not following it, however, can get your child in trouble at school and cause embarrassment and reputational problems! Homeschooling gives your family the freedom to schedule learning and holidays around your own family’s needs. Need to visit a sick grandparent for 2 weeks? No problems! Just pack up your books and go. Time is on your side.

Identity - School children are notorious for labeling others and forming cliques. At no other time in life is this more prevelant than during the school-going years. Many children spend their entire school career looking up to and trying to fit in with the “in-crowd”. Most of them never succeed. If a child doesn’t conform to the in-crowd’s standard of normal…if he’s “too smart”, “too dumb”, “too childlike”, “too adultlike”, “too serious”, “too different”, “too poor”, “too ugly”… mockery and humiliation occur. Homeschoolers are free to follow their own path, develop their own identity, feel empathy, show compassion, and will create their own sense of “what’s cool” in their own eyes. Freedom from peer pressure and cliques especially help shyer, family-oriented children, who appreciate not having to deal with bullies before they are mentally ready.

Socialization - Being age segregated for 40 hours per week, 9 months per year, is not living in the “real world”. School children, cooped up behind doors during daylight hours, are forced to learn things they don’t care about, have no time to learn about their true interests, and are told to stay quiet 98% of the day. Homeschooling allows children the freedom to be out in the “real world” during the daylight business hours, with real adults, enjoying activities that will instill in them the knowledge that they need when they grow up. Parents are also able to easily guide their children in the knowledge it takes to run a household, repair a car, maintain a home business, manage money, pay bills, shop for groceries, prepare meals, sew, work a job, or even learn a trade.
